(updated 8/26/09)
Another RITRA summer team race series has come to an end! Thanks to all participants and race committee for making it the best season of team racing yet! RITRA is looking forward to a break in the action, but is already looking forward to improving for 2010!
Schedule:
Every Tuesday evening. Racing from 5:30pm until sundown. First night June 9 and last night August 25, 2009.
Team Format:
Racing format is standard 3v3 team racing. Boats register for the series and show up for racing individually. Each week boats are assigned to a team by RITRA. The goal of the format is to consistently match up similarly-skilled team racers onto new teams each evening. As such the racing is split into Gold and Silver leagues. Boats will be assigned to a league based on their ranking. A boat’s ranking is determined by its cumulative number of races won as the series progresses. Points are accumulated by winning races as a team each week. Boats can move up or down in the rankings and move up or down between leagues.
-
Teams: Within each league, teams are generated by algorithm so they are equal in terms of ranking. For example, Team A comprised of boats ranked 1, 6 and 13 (total 20) is equal to Team B comprised of boats ranked 3, 8 and 9 (total 20). See Team Generator. Teams will have either 3 of 4 boats any given night, depending on the number of boats racing. In the case of a 4 boat team, all 4 boats will accumulate points together.
-
Scoring: A win in Gold League is worth 1.1 points; A win in Silver is worth 1.0 points; A loss in both leagues is worth 0 points. A boat gains points towards its individual ranking as its team wins races. Registered boats accumulate 0.0 points for races in which they are scored DNS or DNC or otherwise do not compete.
-
Ranking: After each Tuesday the rankings will be recalculated and published on this website, and at that time boats will be automatically redistributed into Gold and Silver Leagues and organized into new teams. For the first week boats will be pre-ranked by RITRA. Thereafter teams will be created by the means outlined in the Team Generator and Rankings. Late-comers into the series and guests may be pre-ranked by RITRA before joining racing. See Rankings.
Communications:
Communication between RITRA and participants regarding racing will be primarily via this webpage and at times via email (see contact at bottom of page.) Upon registering, your email will be added to the fleet email list. Check your email frequently for announcements and important information about the series and other RITRA activity. Each week competitors will need to check the Rankings page to determine i) which team they are (designated by team number), and ii) who they will sail with by using their current ranking and the Team Generator before racing. Each boat is responsible for ensuring their team arrives whole and on time. In the event that a team arrives incomplete the Race Committee may attempt to redistribute boats using the system referred to above, however teams may provide a substitute boat on its own behalf without approval of the Race Committee.
On the water, the Race Committee will communicate who is racing exclusively by team numbers.
Racing Format:
The Race Committee will use either 2- or 3-minute rolling starts as conditions allow. Course choices will be either the Starboard Box or the standard starboard digital N. The Race Committee will strive to sail as many races as possible to the extent that equal number of races in each League is completed. The pace of racing is quick and there will be little waiting time between rounds.
Racing Location:
Racing will take place in the vicinity of Fort Adams in Newport, RI.
Boats:
The Series is sailed in BYO-V15. Storage is available on site - see details below. Limited charter boats are available for Series use. Click here to check availability and to register for a boat.
Registration:
Complete registration and payment is required in order to participate.
There are four registration options available to accommodate your needs. There are three components built into the registration fee: i) Sail Newport membership, ii) Series Fee, iii) storage at Sail Newport. Read carefully the following options before following the Registration link below. Note that Sail Newport and RITRA check to ensure boats have paid and are stored appropriately.
1) Series Rate: Series Fee, membership and storage at Sail Newport from June 1 to August 31. Boats must be stored at the end of the field designated for V15s. This is an excellent deal that Sail Newport offers to the typical seasonal team racer. All boats registered under this option must be removed from Sail Newport by August 31.
2) Seasonal Rate - Grass: Series Fee, membership and "summer" storage at Sail Newport from May 1 to October 15. Boats must be stored in the far end of the field. This is the option if you plan on leaving your boat there after the Series.
3) Seasonal Rate - Gated: Series Fee, membership and storage at Sail Newport from May 1 to October 15. Boats are stored inside the fence.
4) No Storage/SN Employee Rate: Fleet Dues only. Storage and Sail Newport membership not included, either due to being a Sail Newport employee or not needing on-site storage.
